Viking Knit

April 18, 2019

Recently, Leslie of l chain maille came to the studio to teach me a process called viking knit–essentially knitting with metal. I had previously admired her work and wanted to learn the process. I’ve been able to teach her a thing or two in soldering, and it is SUCH a beautiful thing when artists (when people) collaborate and learn from each other. It took me a little while to make the time to do the knitting. I wasn’t sure how much longer it would become after drawing, so I made it plenty long for a necklace for myself.

I eventually got it to about 14 inches, as seen in the photo below. I wanted a 16-18″ necklace by the end of it.

It’s now 25 inches after going through the draw plate! This will be plenty long for a necklace, maybe even a bracelet as well. What a fun addition to the skill book.
