Compass Rose Token

July 2, 2018

The task for this custom project was to create two items as gifts for godchildren. One boy and one girl would be the recipients of these handcrafted adornments with Bible verses that would be subtle enough to not overpower the piece.

We started with the idea the godparent wanted to express, found verses that were fitting and then went through a few design ideas.

After some back and forth, we resolved the design to a compass rose token for the boy and a modern bar necklace with the word “wonderful” on it. The verses chosen by the godparents were

Isaiah 58:11
“The Lord will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.

You will be like a well-watered garden,

like a spring whose waters never fail.”

and Psalm 139:14

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful,

I know that full well.”

The compass rose token was originally imagined as something like a silver dollar that could be carried around in a pocket, since the boy is not likely to wear jewelry. It was first pierced from 14 gauge metal into a circle shape, then drilled so that it could also function as a keychain or pendant if desired in the future. Then I drew the compass rose design with an oil paint market to work as a resist during the metal etching process.

The bar necklace would contain the word “wonderful” on the front with the verse on the back. These were hand stamped in Georgia font and hammered on copper.

The finished pieces answer the call to have meaningful mementos from godparent to godchild.
